LG Optimus M available today on MetroPCS

Earlier this week, MetroPCS joined Virgin Mobile in offering an Android smartphone on a no-contract plan. The Optimus M is nearly identical to the Optimus T on T-Mobile and the Optiums S on Sprint. The MetroPCS version has a slightly tweaked outer design featuring more metal colored accents and buttons, but is essentially the same device.

The Optimus M features a 3.2" screen, 3MP camera, and runs Android 2.2, Froyo. It is went on sale today for $229 (no contract pricing, remember), and requires their $50 unlimited plan. For customers who want a smartphone without a contract, this is a very attractive offer.

It looks really nice and the pricing is great. But it doesn't have a keyboard, and the plan is considerably more than Virgin's ridiculously low $25 smartphone plan. So, I'm sure it'll be an awesome choice for customers who already have MetroPCS and don't want to switch. But definitely not for me.

I like that decent Android smartphones are being offered contract free, and I feel like that's the direction we really should be heading in, even though it's not going to happen. It seems like a nice phone, and I don't really know much about MetroPCS cell coverage vs. Virgin vs. every other cell phone carrier. But it's definitely a step in the right direction, if you ask me.

By the way, it would have been so awesome if LG had a partnership so all of their Optimus phones were Transformers themed. Just sayin'.
